Black PT Nymph with CDC collar hackle is new in my nymhing box and I love it! It is my best Pheasant tail nymph for dark coloured rivers!

Being in Sweden and staying inside due to heavy rain, I made a black PT nymphs with CDC collar hackle just for fun. I was impressed by how good was. I had a lot of nice grayling on it! The mylar combination with black coloured body and cdc seems that triggered the fish. I used this fly for days on different rivers from Lapland and trout and grayling responded very well.

A good tip is to be careful to not overdress it. The fly will not work with too much CDC . I recommend you to use only a few barbs. For example a half black cdc feather is more than enough for big sized nymph (#14 or #12). For a nymph tied on #16 hook only a few barbs are perfect.

Here is the recipe for PT Black Nymph with CDC collar hackle:

  • Ribbing: Silver wire
  • Body: black pheasant fibers
  • Hackle: CDC Black
  • Hot Spot : Orange – Veevus thread
  • Back: Pearl Strip in black peacock
  • Bead: Tungsten metallic pink
  • Tail: Coq de Leon Indio – black
  • is the previous model made

Materials used forBlack PT Nymph tied with partridge:

  • Hook Demmon jig #12-16
  • Thread: Black
  • Ribbing: UV purple ribbing fiber
  • Tail: Coq de Leon Indio – Black
  • Body: black pheasant fibers
  • Hackle: Partridge barbs
  • Hot Spot : Orange – Veevus thread

I love CDC which is my favourite tying materials. I’m thinking to make a few versions of this fly using cdc for body.

I have a few models tied using one single CDC feathers in olive , natural grey and tan, all of them work great.

The Winter is coming we will have plenty of time to make flies. We will fill our boxes with new and interesting nymphs. Lets make a few for the next season 🙂
