An Ultra Buggy Nymph for Early Fishing Days

Hi guys,

I would like to present a nymph that looks rather plain at first glance. What makes it interesting is the combination of materials used. The very spiky, buggy tying style—pushed almost to the extreme—is commonly seen among Czech and Slovak anglers who tie these flies for fast, cold waters, exactly like those we fish at the beginning of the season.

The fly is tied in natural colours, using Hybrid Squirrel Nymph dubbing in grey for both the body and the thorax. What makes it stand out is the addition of a small amount of blue-green synthetic dubbing and a strongly reflective thread used for the ribbing.

This is a fly designed for large, cautious fish, typical of rivers where fishing pressure is high and trout see many anglers.

This grey-and-orange combination works very well in waters where many mayflies are present. In rivers where caddisflies are more abundant, a version with green works better—one that I will present to you in the coming days.

So here are the materials:

  • Hook: size #12-14 – Demmon ST 320 Jig Hook
  • Bead: metallic pink in size #3.5mm
  • Body Thread: body thread in grey or white: Perdigon Body Thread for example
  • Tying thread: any you like, I prefer the thinnest possible ( black or brown ), I use 30DEN Sumo
  • Ribbing: Hot Spot Thread – ultraviolet reflective orange
  • Tail: Coq de Leon in black or dark grey
  • Body: Hybrid Squirrel Dubbing in grey
  • Thorax synthetic dubbing : synthetic green-blue dubbing
  • Thorax legs: made of Hybrid Squirrel Dubbing in black pepper combined with a few CDC grey barbs.
