The Vespertina Mayfly is one of those small, delicate insects that can create very special moments on the water. It is not a large mayfly, but its elegant silhouette, soft colours and fragile movement make it an important pattern to observe, especially when trout are feeding carefully near the surface.
This fly is tied in a simple and efficient way, with a delicate pheasant tail body and a slightly rounded thorax. The thorax is important: it should be full enough to suggest the natural shape of the insect, but also compact enough to offer good support for the CDC wing. This balance gives the fly a natural profile and helps it sit correctly in the water film.
For fly fishermen, this little mayfly is a beautiful reminder that size is not always the most important detail. A slim body, fine tails, a soft CDC wing and a careful drift can make the difference when fish become selective.
