Small Baetis nymphs are delicate flies designed for clear water and careful presentations. This type of pattern comes from the old French style known as nymphe à vue, a technique where the angler spots the fish and presents the nymph directly in front of it. Later, through competition fly fishing, this style became more widely known as sight nymphing.
One important thing: unlike classic heavy nymphs, these small flies are tied with a delicate silhouette and reduced weight. Some are only lightly weighted, while others are not weighted at all. The goal is not to fish deep and close to the river bottom, but to offer a natural, subtle imitation of small mayfly nymphs ( Baetis is one of them).
This kind of nymph can be fished very effectively with a dry fly rod, not only with a dedicated nymphing rod. In gin-clear rivers, where trout can be selective and easily disturbed, a small and natural Baetis imitation can make a big difference.
