Black & Red PT Killer – a Nymph for Autumn Grayling

0 No tags Permalink

When grayling become selective in autumn, this little nymph never fails.
The Black & Red PT Killer has proven again and again to be one of the most effective patterns for cold-season fishing. Its slim silhouette, black body and a tiny red flash provided by ribbing make it irresistible in clear or slightly tinted waters.

It’s a simple yet refined fly — perfect for both beginners and experienced tiers who appreciate subtlety and balance. Give it a try this season, and you’ll see why it’s one of our favourite grayling magnets!

Tying Recipe

  • Hook: Curved, size 14–16 (for a natural, anatomic shape)
  • Thread: Black Troutline Sumo Power Thread 30DEN – keeps the body slim and neat
  • Tail: keep it light, sparse fibers – avoid thick or bushy tails
  • Body: 2–3 black pheasant tail barbs
  • Ribbing: Fine red wire for a discrete hot accent
  • Thorax: Mix of Spectra UV dubbing and Squirrel dubbing for extra life and sparkle
  • Bead: Silver tungsten bead for fast sink and balance

The fly is already very effective as it is, but if you want to fish in deeper pools or cloudy water, you can add a bit of extra sparkle by using ultraviolet tinsel as ribbing along with the wire. This way, the fly keeps a clear and visible silhouette even in darker water.
