Bloody Black Nymph

Hi guys,

After a long absence from my blog, here I am with a new nymph for the upcoming season, which will start in just a few weeks.

Today I want to show you a very simple nymph to tie, but one that performs extremely well in cold and deep water. It’s the kind of fly you can tie quickly, yet it delivers excellent contrast exactly where it’s needed.

This is not an aggressively coloured fly and it has no obvious hot spots. That’s precisely why it works so well in heavily pressured waters, where fish become cautious and reject overly flashy patterns.

I like to use this fly in cold waters, especially early season. All the time I use it in deep runs and in deep pools. The contrast is provided by dark body and red ribbing combined with pink tungsten bead. These elements are visible enough to attract attention, but not so strong that they make the fly look unnatural. It’s a fine balance — and often that balance is what makes the difference in difficult conditions.

If you like, you can adjust the body colours according to your local fishing conditions. You can add synthetic dubbing behind bead or in the dubbing used for body. As always, everything depends on your fishing conditions and your own creativity 🙂

Material used:

  • Hook : jig size #14
  • Thread: Sumo 30DEN
  • Tail: Coq de Leon Indio -negrisco colour
  • Ribbing: red tinsel wire
  • Body: Squirrel Hybrid Dubbing in Salt & Pepper colour
  • Thorax/Legs: same dubbing fixed in dubbing loop, very sparse.
  • Bead: pink tungsten
